Name
Let's Get Social! Social Good & Social Media in the Classroom
Date & Time
Friday, March 23, 2018, 1:15 PM - 2:15 PM
Description
In 2018 it seems that everything has become “social” in one way or another! Social media is ubiquitous and both teachers and students now have the ability to not only access information, but safely engage with experts and express their own ideas to a global audience. Through the use of social media, deep and rich project based learning units can be achieved. Social good and leaving a positive digital footprint is a critical topic in classrooms today, as most students are online no later than 2nd grade. PVSchools is contributing to the largest supercomputer project in the world – Folding@home, hosted at Stanford University. The district initiative known as Cluster Crush is focused on protein folding to aid research into Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer and other devastating diseases. This is the epitome of social good with technology. In this session, teachers from PVSchools will discuss how they are integrating math into distributed computing along with the science of protein folding and how they are incorporating project based learning into the classroom through the use social media with students as a means for reflection, planning and advocacy.
