Description
Maths can provide a whole set of barriers for students. In terms of reading, research has shown that mathematics texts and textbooks contain more concepts per sentence and paragraph than any other type of text. They can contain words as well as numeric and non-numeric symbols to decode and may also include graphics that must be understood for the text to make sense. In addition, many texts are written above the grade level for which they are intended (Barton & Heidema, 2002). When it comes to writing maths equations and other maths expressions, this has not been easy in our tech-focused classrooms where students expect and need to use laptops or chromebooks as their primary writing tool. Using a computer to produce basic fractions can be a challenge. And it’s even tougher adding square root signs, advanced fractions, powers and other mathematical symbols. Join this session to explore how the Chrome extensions Read&Write and EquatIO make it easy to read maths (Read&Write), and easy to create and insert mathematical symbols, graphs and expressions when using Google Forms, Docs, Slides, Sheets and Drawings (EquatIO). No need to spend hours learning complicated maths programming languages like LaTeX. Great for both teachers creating learning materials and for students reading those materials and answering assessment questions. And both Read&Write and EquatIO are now free for teachers! More than this, EquatIO is built on the principles of Universal Design for Learning, providing students with alternative ways of learning maths, and multiple options for demonstrating what they know. It allows for not just keyboard entry of maths symbols and expressions, but also supports students who prefer to handwrite or simply dictate their responses. Effectively taking away the barriers of the terminology and the notation getting in the way of your students being able to understand the underlying maths concepts. Taking away barriers to student engagement.
