Avon Lake High School officially opened in 1923. In 1926, the first graduating class of five students received diplomas. Today, Avon Lake High School serves nearly 1,300 students in grades 9-12. A comprehensive curriculum, special programs and services, as well as a variety of clubs, organizations and athletic activities are available to all students. Course offerings include a rigorous curriculum of 16 Advanced Placement courses, 18 honors courses, and 14 dual-credit courses amongst 118 additional elective courses, some of which include project Lead The Way (Pre-Engineering) and Computer Video Gaming and Design. 
 
Academic achievement of the students at Avon Lake High School has been recognized at the local, state and national level. Newsweek Magazine has ranked the school in the top 1,500 high schools (170th in 2015). 
 For two consecutive school years, Avon Lake High School was named one of “America’s Best High Schools” by U.S. News & World Report and honored as a Silver Medal School from this prestigious publication.
 
More than 90% of graduates of Avon Lake High School attend college and technical schools.

Avon Lake is located in Northern Ohio between the cities of Cleveland and Lorain. As part of Lorain County, Avon Lake's geographical limits lie off the shores of Lake Erie to the north; the land area is roughly 12 (11.64) square miles. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the population is approximately 22,581.
 
Residents enjoy the recreational activities that our City has to offer. The community is comprised of public beaches, 20 miles of bike trails, a boat launch, and many other recreational amenities.
 
Avon Lake boasts a MetroPark, together with 220 additional acres of parklands and playgrounds. Other activities available for the enjoyment of our residents include our municipal swimming pool, golf courses, swim club, tennis courts, outdoor ice rink, youth sports, and adult sports.

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) is located approximately 15 miles southeast of Avon Lake.
 
Located within the Cleveland city limits, nine miles southwest of downtown, Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) is Ohio's largest airport. About 9.1 million passengers used CLE in 2013. Carriers operating at Cleveland Hopkins include Air Canada Express, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, United Airlines, and Frontier Airlines, which has designated the airport as a focus city. Non-stop flights are available to destinations across the United States, as well as points in Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Cleveland Hopkins has three runways and a single passenger terminal with four concourses.
