Senator Gershaw School

Senator Gershaw School provides core programming for over 180 students in Grades 4 through 12 from the surrounding area of Bow Island and Burdett.  60% of the students reside in Bow Island and 40% are bussed from the area.  Agriculture industries are the primary sector of employment. In addition to core programs, Senator Gershaw School provides a nine-year Virtual Conference French program, and six-year Career and Technology Programs in the traditional areas of Financial Management, Home Economics, and Industrial Arts.  Junior high students from Seven Persons School and Burdett also access the CTS programs.  The Bow Island Alternative Program targeting Mennonite high school age and adults began last year.  Currently we have over 30 students enrolled. Individual Program Planning is provided for students in need from Grades 4-12.  Student achievement has been better than provincial average. Student participation rates have been higher than provincial average.  We strive for 100% of students writing Achievement Tests.  Greater than 80% of our high school population takes academic stream programs. The students have done very well through quality instruction and parental support. A full six year extracurricular program is also a feature of our school. Red, white and black are the “Gators” colors for all divisions.  The community desires and supports the extensive athletic program.  Gershaw teams have been a dominant force in leagues and provincials.
 
Bow Island is a small community is SE Alberta, about 60km outside of Medicine Hat.  It is about a 40 minute drive from Medicine Hat.
