Name
Beyond the Headlines: Google Newspapers & Primary Sources to Promote Critical Thinking
Date & Time
Tuesday, June 5, 2018, 9:45 AM - 10:45 AM
Description
Help your students discover a world of information at their fingertips. Google Newspapers is an extension of Google News that provides free access to scanned archives of newspapers. However, is it just one of a myriad of digital libraries and repositories that allow students to explore primary sources. In this session, we’ll learn how to promote critical thinking through the exploration of primary sources. Through a variety of collaborative tasks, educators will experience how to use these digital tools to: -compare and contrast current events from a variety of primary sources; -examine bias and reliability in the news; -explore historical events over the past 250 years; -read and write for meaning; -analyze market trends; -and much more! Real examples and practical applications for all levels and fields of study will be demonstrated, discussed and shared. Session will be hands-on, with dedicated time built in to explore the tools discussed.
